Why do you apply a primer to your boat?

A primer, also called base coat, is a first coat of paint applied to a bare or sanded surface. The main purpose of a primer is to improve the adhesion of subsequent coats of paint or varnish. In addition, a primer provides protection against corrosion (for metal surfaces), moisture (for wood surfaces). It also provides an even surface, making the topcoat more beautiful and durable.

When used on boats, the primer ensures that the final coat of paint will adhere well even under harsh conditions such as prolonged exposure to water, UV radiation, and varying temperatures.

Different types of primers

Epoxy primer
Epoxy primers, such as the Sigma cover 280, are suitable for virtually all surfaces, including steel, aluminum, wood, and polyester. Especially popular on boats because of its excellent adhesion and water resistance. Ideal for use below the waterline. Can be used as a base for both antifouling and topcoat.

Polyurethane primer
Polyurethane primers, such as the Epifanes Poly-Urethane Primer, are especially suitable for use on metal and polyester. It is often used above the waterline and as a base for polyurethane paints.

Alkyd primer
An alkyd primer is used on wood and metal; for example, the Werdol Metal Primer or Werdol White Menie. It is suitable as a base for one component topcoats.

Zinc-rich primer
Zinc-rich primers, such as the Sigmacover 256 and the Werdol Zinc Compound, are specific to steel and iron. The primer contains zinc, which acts as cathodic protection against rust and corrosion. It works well as a first coat on bare, metal surfaces. Zinc-rich primers are often used on steel structures and metal hulls, below the waterline.

Etchprimer (adhesive primer)
An etch primer, or adhesive primer such as the International Interprime 539, is specially designed for non-ferrous metals. Non-ferrous metals do not contain iron, or iron is not the main component, such as aluminum, copper, stainless steel and galvanized steel. Etchprimer contains acids that ‘etch’ the surface. This makes the surface slightly rougher, which makes subsequent coats of paint adhere better. Etch primers are used on surfaces that do not adhere as well by themselves, such as smooth metals.

Two component primer
Two component primers can be applied to different materials, such as metal, polyester and wood. They offer high resistance to chemicals and water. A two-component primer, such as the International Intershield 300, is suitable for both below and above the waterline.

Water-based primer
A water-based primer is more environmentally friendly than other primers. It is mainly used on wood and metal. This primer is suitable for less demanding environments and for use in areas where the environment is an important factor. In our product range we have the Mondial primer white water-based.

Most frequently asked questions about primers

A primer is a specific type of primer designed to improve the adhesion of the subsequent coat of paint and to provide protection against rust, corrosion or moisture. Primer is a general term for the first coat of paint applied to a surface, and can include both primers and other adhesion coatings. Both are important to ensure proper adhesion of the topcoat and to protect the surface from external influences.
It is highly recommended to always use a primer before applying topcoat, especially on new, unpainted surfaces or when dealing with exposed substrates such as steel, wood or polyester. Primer improves the adhesion of the topcoat, provides additional protection and prevents premature peeling or damage to the topcoat.
The choice of primer depends on the material of your boat and the conditions in which it will be used. For example, a rust-resistant epoxy primer is often recommended for steel boats, and two-component primer is appropriate for wooden boats to prevent moisture penetration. Polyester or fiberglass boats require a special polyester or epoxy primer that provides good adhesion. It is important to choose the right primer that is compatible with both the underlying material and the topcoat you plan to apply.
It is usually recommended to apply at least two coats of primer for good coverage and protection. Between each coat, lightly sand the surface to achieve a smooth finish and improve the adhesion of the next coat. This also helps to remove any irregularities or dust particles that may appear during application.
