What is splitting for your boat?
Splitting is a technique in which the strands of a rope are braided to make a strong, permanent loop or connection. It is often used on marine ropes to make loops, eyelets, or connections without knots.
Why split?
Splitting is used because it creates a stronger, safer and more reliable connection than a knot. A properly spliced rope retains almost the full strength of the original rope and reduces wear and tear.
Supplies when splitting rope
For successfully splicing ropes you need a variety of tools. You can find these tools in our assortment. Think for example of a split horn for precise braiding, a cutters or scissors for neatly cutting off, a rope burner to finish the ends, and a palm To protect your hands. At CIV, make sure you have everything you need to finish your rope professionally and safely.
Most frequently asked questions about splitting tools
A splice retains almost the full strength of the rope, while a knot often loses 30-50% of rope strength due to stress distribution.
You can split on different types of ropes such as nylon, polyester, or polypropylene, both with 3-strand braided rope and double braided rope.
Depending on technique and experience, it usually takes between 15 minutes and an hour to complete a splits properly.
Yes, a splice can be undone, but it can be tricky if the rope has been under tension for a long time.
