The different types of rope at CIV Harlingen
Twisted rope
Beaten rope, such as Manila Rope, is a traditional type of rope, made of three or more strands twisted together. It has a robust, classic appearance and offers a good grip. It is flexible, easy to split and suitable for various marine applications. Beaten ropes are often made of materials such as polyester, nylon or polypropylene.
Braided rope
Braided rope, for example Orca 12 pro, consists of several strands woven together in a braid pattern. This rope is smoother and stronger than beaten rope, and has a smoother surface. It is less prone to twisting or kinking, making it ideal for use as a mooring line or halyard in sailing.
Tipto Twelve rope
Tipto Twelve rope is a special type of 12-strand braided rope made from a light and strong polypropylene blend. It combines low stretch with high tensile strength, making it suitable for heavy-duty applications such as anchor lines and tow lines. It floats on water, making it easy to retrieve in marine situations.
Fishing rope
Rope for fishing, such as Penetrate Purple, is often made of rugged materials such as polypropylene or nylon and designed to withstand water, salt and abrasion. It is used for nets, lines and attaching buoys. These ropes are often lightweight and buoyant, making them ideal for this application.
Frequently asked questions about rope types
Yes, you can combine different types of rope depending on their specific properties. For example, use beaten rope for traditional look and easy splitting, while braided rope is ideal for traps and shots because of its strength and flexibility.
Braided polyester rope has the least stretch, making it ideal for applications where minimal stretching is essential, such as falls and shots.
Polyester braided rope is most suitable because it is resistant to UV radiation, salt water, and abrasion.
Rinse ropes regularly with fresh water to remove salt and dirt and store them in a dry, dark place to prevent damage from UV radiation and mold.
The diameter of the rope depends on the load and application. For larger boats and heavier loads, thicker rope is recommended (e.g., 14-16 mm for mooring lines on a yacht), while thinner rope (8-10 mm) will suffice for smaller boats and less stressful applications.
